Is owning DVDS already "old school"? I'm starting to think that having a DVD collection is one of those things that shows your age.
I mean, we don't have any device that plays Blu-Rays.And what good is a digital download when the babe wants to watch How to Train your Dragon on the Mac and you need it for business purposes? Ok, Pinterest purposes. So DVDs are still an acceptable medium, right?
Netflix makes owning a lot of movies & TV series unnecessary. And Redbox helps to sample things that you were too weary to pay to see in theatres. So when it comes to owning hard copies, where do you turn?
For Brand New Releases:
I NEVER buy movies at the store as soon as they're released!
$20+, seriously?! I know that same movie is going to be half of that price in about 6 months. Unless it's a Pixar/Disney movie, those prices barely ever fall.
For Not-So-New DVDs:
* Half.com
So many NEW/USED deals! The biggest downfall is not knowing wether the seller is fibbing about the condition of the disks.
* Entertainment Resale Shops
These kinds of businesses tend to have some silly-high prices for used goods, but they often have sales to try to unload inventory! Like "4 for $20" and such!
* Store Closings
I hate to take advantage of such a sad situation but video stores, like Blockbuster, are closing everywhere. And when they do close, they close FAST. So their prices are insanely affordable. I went to a closing sale a few months ago and walked out with 7 DVDs for $30! I was able to take home movies that were very hard to find at a low price (Pixar, Wes Andersons, and very new releases!). You can even look at the discs to check their condition before you buy!
Stores that are still open and functioning sell excess DVDs after the initial release rush has ended. Newish releases for like $8.00? Yes, please!
If you take these measures, the entertainment area at Target doesn't even register in your memory. You're way to busy shopping the Clothing SALE racks anyway.
These are the DVDs that I'm currently on the prowl for:

I don't know if they have a Big Lots where you live, but I was at one today and they had "Away We Go" for three dollars.
ReplyDeleteI saw Whip It at Target marked down to $7 a few days ago! :)
ReplyDeleteI love Whip It! So many great actresses in it. Makes me want to be a roller girl so badly.
ReplyDeleteMy local supermarket is really good for cheap DVDs - less than it costs to rent them. But my DVD collection is embarrassingly huge, and I don't have much time to watch them, I must have a clear out.
Whip it is on sale at Target for $7 right now.
ReplyDeleteMy husband shops deepdiscount.com and has found us lots of the DVDs we wanted for really cheap! Deals can be hit-or-miss, and you have to pay shipping, but they are definitely a good resource for us.
ReplyDeleteLove the new direction of the blog, btw! :)

I can sometimes find super cheap movies at my local grocery store. I just picked up away we go from our wegmans for only $5 a week ago!
ReplyDeleteBig Lots is great for DVD deals...love the new blog sarah...really looking forward to budget wedding ideas as I hsve 2 daughters 21 and 23 getting married in Nov, and May who could really need some help! I know your big day will be here soon
ReplyDeleteI would love to find The Brother Bloom on DVD for cheap!
ReplyDeleteIf you find a good deal I would love to know!
I normally wait out Target sales. They have incredibly low prices ($4 sometimes!) but usually under $15.
I bought both Away We Go and the Brothers Bloom at Big Lots for about $3-$5 a pop. And I would also suggest Amazon. I just got a CD for my dad for his b-day with shiping for $5 bucks. You can't beat that.
ReplyDeleteI found whip it at target yesterday for $7.50 I think thats a pretty good deal. I know walgreens I don't know if you have them there its like a rite aid or cvs. They have $3 movie bins and can find some pretty new movies in there.

ReplyDeleteThese days we just Netflix everything. I'm going to have to check out Whip it/brothers bloom
"Away We Go" was such an awesome movie. So full of love, emotion and laughter.
ReplyDeleteVery nice, thanks for sharing. rental mobil
ReplyDeleteI just recently wrote a post about my sadness for movie store closings. What if i want to rent a movie to watch instantly that a little bit older. Red box doesnt have it and instant netflix has like 4 good movies. It's so sad. But those are some super handy site for cheap buys. I need to start stalking up! I love having DVDs on hand
ReplyDeleteIf you have a Five Below in your area, they have Away We Go (for $5). At least, the one in my area of PA does.
ReplyDeleteI have been wanting to watch Away We Go for ages and definitely need to rent that one. I have heard great things!
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, I LOVE your hair, your daughter's name and your blog :) I will continue to follow!
Keep the great posts coming and have a wonderful night.

Whip it is my all time favourite film :) xx
ReplyDeletewhip it and the brothers bloom are both amazing movies! i'm looking for the bloom soundtrack - those instrumentals are pretty rad.
ReplyDeleteand can i ask, how did you ever make custom overhead tabs for blogger? i've been trying to figure out how forever but i never learned how!
i saw "Away we go" at our big lots for either $3, or $5! you should check that out, they have some great dvds. which is weird...haha!
ReplyDeleteI really must take a look at some of this films, they seem pretty cool. Nice blog you have here, i'm your newest follower! :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't think about this until I read your blog, but you're definitely right. Come to think of it, I haven't bought a dvd in a very long time, yet I'm staring at a bookcase full. We usually go the redbox route at my house!
ReplyDeleteI use the digital option. When I moved last, taking the dvds was such a hassle so we took them all out of their cases and into a dvd book. Donated the cases to the local library since people are always ruining the stuff they barrow. I love how free the living area is without having to have storage for the films. It was hard to let go at first - that being said its funny because its just plastic but it did cost money. lol. I have one of my older laptops hooked up behind the tv via HDMI and that is how we watch movies (we don't subscribe to any tv access).
ReplyDeleteSo funny. We have a pretty good DVD collection, well in our opinion. However, I agree that spending $20 or more on a new release seems crazy. I'm sure plenty of people do it, but not me! I'd say we've bought most of our DVD's at yard sales and as preowned DVD's at Blockbuster.
ReplyDeleteGo to gohastings.com... Reason being that they often have Buy 1 Get 1 for $1 on all their USED merch. Also, the used prices are pretty cheap and the closer they get to holidays, the more deals they have... I'm addicted. Officially. And I still have a DVD collection. How else am I supposed to balance my book collection?
ReplyDelete;)
